There is cross-country skiing on the Bergen city peaks whilst in the region there are resorts including Voss, the largest ski area in western Norway. Accessed from the city centre railway station, the mainline train takes guests from Bergen and stops directly outside the Voss Gondola, in just over an hour.

The gondola is directly linked to the mainline train station and the ski lift is just steps from the train carriages. Voss skiing takes place directly above the resort with slope-side accommodation and a fantastic new lift station complex with bar, restaurant, meeting rooms and ski hire. Views across the glaciated landscape is wonderful and novel with distant valleys in view. The skiing is mixed and ideal for a couple of days fun, whilst the off-piste takes place on wide, open peaks.

For those looking for a sustainable ski event, a Bergen / Voss event is as close to complete as anywhere. The resort and ski area are powered by local hydro-electric power, the Voss gondola generates green power when downloading skiers in the afternoon and the direct train access is by electric train, powered from renewable sources.

There are many reasons to feel good on the spectacular slopes of Voss. Geilo some 2 hours on from Voss by train is another excellent choice for those visiting Bergen. Skiing takes place on both sides of the resort and serviced by over 20 lifts. Sustainable access to Geilo can be made by rail from Bergen.

BERGEN CITY

The 2nd city of Norway, with a population of 270,000, Bergen is known as the gateway to the Norwegian fjords. With a central harbour and extensive waterfront to the west of the city centre, Bergen is innately connected to the water. The central fish market lands catches that are cooked just metres away, whilst the historic Bryggen waterfront is some of the most Instagrammed imagery in Norway.

The centre of Bergen is wonderfully compact with a pedestrianised area offering views of the contrasting Bergen backdrops. Beautiful and offering superb public facilities, Bergen is a model city. The restaurants are stylish and offer regional cuisine, whilst to the south and east of central Bergen, the local mountains wrap around the city and offer a fantastic playground for locals and visitors.

One of the real joys of Bergen is the able to wander the compact centre and take in all the main attractions. The harbour, castle, central shopping area, restaurants, theatre, museums, and the hotels are all within easy reach via the pedestrianised centre. In winter the centre of Bergen is given over to a Christmas Market, the festive lights shining bright during the short Scandinavian days, with locals enjoying some alfresco goodlife.

There are Christmas themes throughout the city and the snow-capped mountains create a wonderful atmosphere. After dark, Bergen offers a range of dining options and super trendy bars, again all within easy reach of the central hotels. Bergen airport is located just outside the city and can be reached by road or the electric light railway.

BERGEN NIGHTLIFE

Bergen was recognised for its gastronomy with a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy award in 2015. The city offers wonderful regional Norwegian cuisine in its restaurants. There are waterfront restaurants, dining in the stunning Bryggen historic district, as well as in the city mountains – the Skyskraperen on Mount Ulriken is a standout dining venue with stunning vistas over the city from the incredible terrace.

Root crops, game and local seafood are all widely found on menus in Bergen, offering a gastronomic experience that is unique to western Norway.

Bergen is a vibrant city with commerce, traditional industries & crafts and a large university all adding to the atmosphere. There are some wonderfully Nordic central bars and clubs to enjoy. Prices are above average but not unknown in European capitals or on the slopes of France or Switzerland. Christmas markets are a great way to meet the locals, enjoy the wonderful illuminations and gaze over the glistening local peaks.

BERGEN MEETINGS & SEMINARS

Bergen has a fantastic range of meeting & seminar venues. The city offers waterfront venues, spaces in the mountains, historic rooms, and ultra-modern suites to meet in. There are conference facilities in the central Bergen hotels as well as in dedicated congress centres located throughout the city and waterfront.

Meetings can take place on the waters of the local fjords for a truly special escape – nothing frees the mind like a seminar on the waters of the Norwegian fjords.

The Nordic nations are masters  in creating truly special venues and Bergen is no different. From the flooring to the lighting, Norwegian interiors are just pure quality. Given the nature around Bergen, meeting venues can frame some sumptuous views whilst letting in the spectacular Nordic natural light.

All-in-all, Bergen offers some exquisite venues to meet in.

BERGEN SUSTAINABILITY

Snowflake

Bergen is a shining example of how the world needs to function – the beauty is that they have already achieved so much, yet still set hugely ambitious targets.

Bergen has the highest concentration of electric ferries in the world, all running on renewable electricity or hybrid, in the process reducing noise, pollution, and greenhouse gases.

All taxis must be electric by 2025 and 80% of all new car purchases in Bergen are fully electric. Over 98% of electricity in Bergen comes from renewable sources, with hydro power providing 90% of the electricity.

For those wanting to ski, Voss ski resort is reached directly by mainline electric train from Bergen, whilst the Voss gondola generates power when downloading passengers

Bergen cuisine not only tends to be uniquely Norwegian and delicious, but it is also in the main, locally sourced. Regional meats, seafood and local vegetables all contribute heavily to the Bergen menus.

Equalities & freedoms are enshrined in the Norwegian psyche and local cultures & practices thrive. Those visiting Bergen will be emersed in a wonderfully authentic Norwegian experience.

BERGEN - UNMISSABLE

There is so much to love about Bergen. The historic waterfront, the UNESCO food, the sorting action of Voss.

But to really appreciate the geography of Bergen, take the cable car to the Ulriken peak, enjoy incredible food & wine and marvel at the contrasting terrain – mountains giving way to the ocean.
