Connecting thermal waters & glacial ice in Kaprun |

In recent years, Kaprun got the most spectacular spa complex in the region. Bathers could gaze skyward from steaming pools toward the towering Kitzsteinhorn Glacier and contemplate their ski bus journey. That is all about to change.

Big lift developments are underway that will link the ski resort of Kaprun, directly to the glacial ice of the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier ski area. Offering the highest skiing in the region on the fantastic Kitzsteinhorn Glacier and arguably the best spa complex in the Alps, Kaprun had some standout facilities on-hand. The problem was, whilst the bubbling thermal pools of the Tauern Spa were in the resort, (along with shops, bars, castles and hotels), the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier took a ski bus or transfer connection to get to from Kaprun.

Whilst there was the Maiskogel ski area on the edge of the resort, skiers and snowboarders would always be tempted to sample the extensive glacier ski area from September through to summer. But the lack of lift connection between the main accommodation centre and the snow of the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier wasn’t the biggest selling point for Kaprun.

So, developments are underway to connect the Maiskogel ski area with the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier from December 2019. Talk in recent years has been of a lift link from Zell am See to Saalbach-Hinterglemm – if that comes off then the Zell am See - Kaprun ski region will be making the headlines.
