Mid-August snow hits the glaciers

The warm summer weather that has persisted over the Alps in recent weeks certainly broke last night with cold conditions combining with sub-zero temperatures across the glacial regions of the Alps to produce a good dump of snow on the glaciers.

Many of the glaciers are currently open for summer hiking but this snow was easily enough to bury walking tracks and rid the glaciers of walkers today. The temperatures are set to a little higher over the next 2 days but then over the weekend and early next week there should be falling temperatures and more snow on the glaciers. The Austrian glaciers are set to open late September (depending on snow) whilst the Hintertux Glacier continues to operate throughout August and September.
