Nowhere does mountain eye-candy like Chamonix |

Winter on Instagram is a global ‘my mountain is bigger than yours’ contest, but despite the competition, there are only ever the runners-up spots available.

Debate may rage as to the most jaw-dropping horizon in the Alps. The north face of the Eiger seen from Grindelwald is spellbinding, the sheer gradient and scale of the Eiger is hard to comprehend whilst its history of conquest and tragedy make it a place to reflect on the allure of the mountains.

Standing in front of the Matterhorn for the first time is like the ultimate moment of déjà vu, given that the peak is one of the most widely reproduced geological silhouettes in the world. The weather that wraps around the peak and the changing light almost make the Matterhorn seem alive.

But for me, the Chamonix valley is the ultimate eye-candy in the mountains. The Aiguille du Midi, the glacial cascades and the looming Mont Blanc are truly spectacular, and it is hard to argue for a more stupendous vista. And when taken in totality, the Chamonix valley offers the emerald Glacier d'Argentière, the Mer de Glace and the mind-blowing Aiguille Les Drus.

Pick a location in the Chamonix valley, look south-east and take in some of the most remarkable natural features imaginable.
