Powder ski day - 2nd September

The first forecast of the winter 2012/13 season! You could be forgiven for feeling that forecast snow is somewhat premature given the fact that it is still August, yet 12 degrees and heavy rain at 575m on Friday in the Innsbruck valley suggest the peaks are set for their first dump of snow.

Saturday will see similarly spectacular weather and the glacier skiing areas should be in great shape with the Hintertux Glacier sure to offer some powder skiing. Crevasses, restricted terrain and limited lift operations maybe, but the thought of deep powder on the first weekend of September is a reminder that the winter ski and snowboard season is very much upon us. It will be some weeks before the majority of the glacier skiing areas in the Alps open but in Austria from the end of September onwards there should be anything from good to great skiing on offer. Let the winter begin!
