St Anton's split personality

Can there be any serious snow enthusiast on the planet who hasn't heard of St Anton am Arlberg? In the winter months the village pumps with snow seekers and powder hounds from around the world and they spill out of every nook and cranny Apres Bar, then count the minutes till the lifts open the next morning.

But St Anton hides a split personality, because in summer the village and surrounding mountains of St Anton are transformed. Gone are the gaudy snowboard outfits, skis which cost the equivalent of a small car and the requisite stampede to the bar, and this is all replaced by the peace and tranquillity of a pristine alpine setting. This more genteel pace is the perfect location for breathing in the fresh mountain air and giving the hiking boots a good workout. And what's more, the hotel prices in summer are a fraction of the cost of their winter tariff.

Apart from the exertions of hiking, biking, walking, golfing, tennis, rafting and swimming more cultural pursuits are also on offer in St Anton during the summer. This even includes the Opera in the Park next week, set in the beautiful gardens of a century's old villa they will be transformed for a performance of Don Pasquale from Gaetano Donizetti.

St Anton really is a destination for all seasons.
