The most atmospheric ski resort in the world?

For towering, iconic backdrops there are Chamonix or Zermatt, whilst for charm it has to be Lech an Arlberg but for atmosphere there really can't be any contenders to match Kitzbuhel.

The medieval centre is a mix of ancient buildings that exude charm and atmosphere and it is impossible to resist the draw of the place. Above the roof tops the famous peaks are just visible linking this ancient centre to the even more ancient mountains.

This image above is in one of the most wonderful settings in the resort, just a short distance back from the popular pedestrianized area and showing off the ancient architecture of Kitzbuhel. A 180 degree swivel reveals the familiar and foreboding terrain of the Streif downhill race piste which towers above the resort. From this one spot the whole meaning of Kitzbuhel unfolds. Of course there are endless features in this rich resort to enthrall the visitor including sumptuous chalets, grand hotels and ancient vaulted-ceiling walkways but for us the area around the Kitzbuhel Congress centre is our favourite - we haven't found anything to beat it in the mountain resorts of the world.
