Who needs powder?

I have to say that in places there was too much of the stuff judging by those skiers and snowboarders trying to dig themselves out of the huge powder on the Stubai Glacier in Austria over the weekend.

There really were sections that had seen too much snow - I was stood in close to a metre of fresh powder at one point. At over 3200m the air was still cool but the glacier was bathed in spring sun and the powder tracks could be seen way into the distance (see above!) One thing that always comes to mind when returning to the Austrian glaciers are the conditions that are on offer at times out of the peak winter months. From September onwards the skiing on the Stubai Glacier can be sensational and it is common to get powder days as late as June each year - the message is that if your group needs powder skiing out of peak months then it is absolutely there to be devoured and the coming weeks and months will prove this beyond doubt!
