Winter officially opens

Our ski season is officially open following the first ski of the 2013/14 season on the Hintertux Glacier, Austria yesterday. Fresh snow over the last few days has created a snow depth of some 75cm on the glacier and with 22km of piste open the conditions were really great for the 2nd week in September!

Skiing was possible all the way down to the Tuxer Fernerhaus which is undergoing a huge redevelopment and should be ready to open in November. Under the mighty Olperer peak there was plenty of fresh snow although finding the next piste markers was more of a concern than fresh tracks. Further down the mountain there were plenty of skiers and boarders getting some very, very early off-piste action in better visibility conditions.

The forecast for the coming week is for cool, wet weather in the Eastern Alps so the glacier skiing areas should be adding to their already impressive snow depths!
