A global problem needing a global solution – the UN has stepped in and created the blueprint for sustainable development.
There are no greater shared problems than the climate, and whilst it is wrong to think of sustainability as simply decarbonisation, it is a good example of where isolationism is impotent when tackling a global issue. For that reason, the United Nations codified a list of sustainable development objectives in the hope of uniting a global effort to tackle the issues.
The ‘United Nations Sustainable Development Goals’ runs to 17 topics and whilst some developed nations have already achieved a number of the goals, many countries still use several of the objectives as the basis of national sustainability awards. In short the UN provides the framework which many nations choose to use in setting their national sustainability targets.

EVOLUTION OF UNITED NATIONS SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS
From the 17 United Nations sustainable development goals, sustainability compliance frameworks have evolved around 3 pillars – those of environmental, social and economic sustainability.
Much of the sustainability limelight is legitimately taken by environmental sustainability considerations. These imperatives somewhat overshadow the other noble pursuits of social and economic sustainability.
