Sandwiched between the golden sands of the Mediterranean and the Montserrat mountains, Barcelona occupies a location of remarkable contrasts. Predominantly ‘low-rise’ the city skyline continues to be dominated by the Sagrada Familia Basilica, the gothic Gaudí masterpiece that towers over the city. This and a few other tall structures do little to obscure the rooftop views of both the mountains or the Mediterranean Sea, from much of the city.

On the ground, the famous La Rambla is one of the most famous pedestrian streets in Europe and serves to connect the central Plaça de Catalunya with the port to the south. Along its 1.2km length are endless shops, bars and restaurants. The port quayside is easily accessed from the city centre offering great waterfront walks amongst the moored boats.

Barcelona is popular and crowds flock to the main sites in and around the city. These places are popular for good reason – Barcelona is irresistible. In spring and autumn, the crowds can be far more manageable at the must-see Barcelona venues. Spain is a culinary delight and Barcelona offers the full range of superb dining from the waterfront, through the city and beyond to the mountains on the western edge of the city.

Just about every taste can be catered for in Barcelona but with Spanish cuisine offering so much, sampling the regional dishes of Catalonia is essential. Catalonian food ranges from gourmet seafood to simple pleasures such as Pan con tomate or croquettes.

As city architecture becomes more generic across the world, it is such a delight to discover daring buildings that are as much art as function.

Dominating the Barcelona skyline is the La Sagrada Familia, conceived by Antoni Gaudí. But right through the city are wonderous works of architecture that are a joy to marvel at.
