Creating a unique Christmas party represents the biggest challenge in any event planner’s calendar. Booked venues, eye-watering venue fees and a straight-jacket of creativity – Christmas party planning is painful. So why not escape to where Christmas is fresh and authentic, where snow replaces the spray-on artificial version and venues offer relaxed spaces and everyday prices?
Most Christmas markets in the Alps are as much for the locals as the visitors. They consist of festive stalls erected in town or village centres, serving hot food and drinks around blazing fire baskets. The scent of Glühwein and traditional music fill the air to create a fantastic atmosphere, and there are few locations that can compete with the feel of a Christmas market setting in the mountains.
For skiers, Christmas markets offer a great communal meeting point after the lifts have stopped for the day. For non-skiers, the lunchtime openings at the bigger locations mean that Christmas markets can be an afternoon activity. Christmas markets tend to be public spaces, and this is part of their charm, but market stalls and trappings can also be arranged on private property to create private Christmas market experiences.
Christmas markets run from mid/late November through to post-Christmas in many locations in the Alps. Cities such as Salzburg and Innsbruck operate numerous Christmas markets throughout the city centres, whereas smaller Christmas markets in villages such as Lech am Arlberg or Mayrhofen offer wonderfully intimate markets in stunning settings.
