Excluding Ischgl, St Anton is at the top of the world's après ski pyramid. Its slopes are seriously tough but its après ski is on another level. This is après ski at its withering best.
The action starts on the lower slopes of the St Anton ski area. The Mooserwirt, Krazy Kanguruh, Sennhutte and Arl One are all stop-offs on a super-challenging blue piste. Most slide on the terraces to avoid the crowded pistes.
Regularly referenced as the biggest-selling bar in Austria by beer volume, the Mooserwirt is a unique experience. Packed to the rafters and all corners of the terrace, this is a party like few others.
For those who survive the Mooserwirt, Basecamp is the next test of resolve - an open-sided resort that is reached by ski. For those with the staying power for more après ski, further suggestions are found below.
Possibly the single biggest name in après ski, the Mooserwirt is an iconic hut on the lower slopes of St Anton with a claim to being the biggest vendor of beer in Austria.
The ski piste back to the valley narrows as it passes the Mooserwirt terrace, and few manage to escape its pull - it is the stuff of legend.
There is action on the terrace and inside the packed but throughout the winter. The resort run at closing time is utter mayhem.
Since 1965, the iconic Krazy Kanguruh has been delivering its unique brand of Alpine Wellness to the Arlberg masses.
Located on the lower slopes of the St Anton ski area, close to the Mooserwirt and Sennhutte, the bar is pumping throughout the winter months.
Owned by local skiing legend Mario Matt, the Krazy Kanguruh attracts an international crowd.
Slightly further up the mountain than the Mooserwirt, it is possible to make a 2-stop strategy, visiting 2 of the world’s finest on-mountain après ski bars.
Located on the resort's edge, just steps from the Galzigbahn, Basecamp is a ski-in bar that regularly captures those escaping the Mooserwirt and Krazy Kanguruh.
Basecamp is an open-fronted umbrella bar that opens directly onto the ski piste. In the late afternoon, live music and DJs entertain guests.
