And skiing up to over 3800m ensures that the snow quality can be outstanding, throughout the long ski season, both at the beginning and end of winter.
The Zermatt ski area is accessed by both mountain railway and cable car. The ski pistes descend from the cloud-piercing top station right back to the resort more than 2km vertically below. The skiing favours the intermediate and better, beginners are less well catered for. There is some excellent off-piste and with the Matterhorn on the horizon, the ski area has a big feel with towering distant peaks circling the ski area.
From the top station skiers and snowboarders can travel into Italy for a change of perspective or cuisine. The upper section of the Zermatt ski area generally offers wider and more gentle skiing on the main Theodulgletscher (glacier). This is also the point of entry/exit to the Cervinia ski area on the Italian side of the Matterhorn.
At 3480m, the Plateau Rosa is a stunning transit point. The pistes departing the glacier area to Furi and beyond to Zermatt are fantastic and long, passing beneath the Matterhorn and through changing terrain. The Gornergrat and Rothorn ski areas offer some great, diverse ski terrain with the Gornergrat providing the biggest beginner area in the Zermatt ski region.
