Kitzbühel is probably the most recognisable name in world skiing. Famed for its annual Kitzbühel race weekend, the resort is the benchmark for extreme downhill ski racing, hosting the world's most feared and revered ski race. Aside from this fearsome ski route, the skiing in Kitzbühel stretches continuously from Pass Thurm in the south to the neighbouring Kirchberg, just northwest of Kitzbühel, offering fantastic intermediate skiing. Many upgraded lifts serve the area, whilst the on-mountain restaurants are stylish, with enviable locations.
To the north of Kitzbühel is the Kitzbüheler Horn ski area – a distinct and separate ski area, with a big terrain park and southern-facing slopes. For the mile-hungry skiers and snowboarders, there is the chance to ski from the Hahnenkamm sector to Westendorf and beyond into the Ski Welt ski region, which includes Söll, Brixen, Ellmau and other resorts. The ski resources in the region are absolutely massive.
The majority of the region is ideal for intermediates. Yet, there is plenty of steep skiing below the Hahnenkamm and the Hohe Salve, while the off-piste on the north-facing slopes above Kitzbühel can be sensational.
