Size matters and Val Thorens is not only the highest ski resort in the Alps, but also part of the biggest ski area in the world – Les 3 Vallées remains the daddy of linked ski areas. Activities are fantastic, après ski vibrant and the ski-in / ski-out village accesses glacier skiing and the rest of Les 3 Vallées skiing.
Within Les 3 Vallées Courchevel remains the most upmarket resort, with stunning opulence, unmatched access to the slopes and fantastic evening entertainment. Between Courchevel and Val Thorens lies Méribel, the bustling resort with chalets and pumping bars. It is also the site of La Folie Douce and has some of the best nightlife in the French Alps.
Another vast ski area is the Portes du Soleil on the Swiss border and home to the twin resorts of Morzine-Avoriaz. Buzzing with life, Morzine is one of the most charming resorts in the French Alps and offers one of the shortest airport transfers.
Many argue that the best skiing in France is found at Val d’Isère. It accesses glaciers above the resort (and Tignes), has some serious, challenging on and off-piste terrain, has a large vibrant resort and some famously good après ski. As global brands go, few can match Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, the town is a Mecca for alpinists and snow sports devotees.
It is staggering on the eye – the Aiguille du Midi defying all logic - and offers a range of the skiing the length of the valley. Megève is like an elder statesman, one of the first luxury alpine retreats in the Alps and still offering some of the best names in the Alps. La Clusaz has a fantastically short transfer from Geneva and has a charming village and some great skiing for a short trip.
There are old stalwarts like Megève where Michelin is on the menu, and the truly charming Samoëns with its interlinked ski areas. France has endless corporate ski event options, pretty much something for every group.
