ST ANTON SKIING

Skiing takes place on both side of the valley above St Anton am Arlberg. To the south of St Anton is the Rendl ski area, now accessed by a new gondola system and famed for off-piste skiing on its north-facing slopes. With a large snow park and a ‘local’s’ feel, the Rendl is often overlooked by those wanting to charge through to distant reaches of the Arlberg ski region.

To the north of the resort, lifts connect to the Galzig and Kapall ski areas, ski sectors that people most readily associate with St Anton skiing. There is a wide range of terrain in this area with gentle runs into St Christoph and huge off-piste bowls between the Kapall and the Valluga areas. There are beginner slopes on the northern edge of the resort, but these soon give way to the increasing gradients of the mountains which tower over St Anton.

The valley runs can be chopped-up and busy at the end of the day, but beginners can download on the gondolas and avoid the challenging pistes. Good skiers and snowboarders would be advised to hire a local guide to access the incredible off-piste terrain, whilst for those looking for the ultimate experience, heli-skiing operates in the Arlberg – the only region in Austria where this is permitted.

Beyond the St Anton ski area, the skiing reaches out into the Arlberg ski region as far as Warth on the northern edge of the Arlberg. Stuben is the first resort (after St Christoph) which is accessible by snow. It has a compact on-piste ski area but boasts some of the best off-piste skiing in the Alps with incredible terrain. On powder days there can be few better places in the world to be.

Alpe Rauz forms the western limit of the St Anton ski sector and as well as the start of the Stuben ski sector, the area also hosts the new Flexenbahn gondola, reaching into the Zürs am Arlberg ski sector. Zürs has an amazing snow record and has some fantastic intermediate piste skiing. It is also part of the White Ring ski circuit that loops into Lech am Arlberg via a wonderful ski route that descends into Zug.

Lech am Arlberg offers more gentle, intermediate cruising whilst both Lech and Zürs offer spectacular off-piste terrain as well as heli-skiing services, departing from the ski area. Heading north out of Lech am Arlberg is Warth, the northern-most point of the Arlberg ski region and a ski area that is reputed to be the snowiest in the Alps, in terms of annual snow accumulation.

ST ANTON APRÈS SKI

Rated amongst the very best après ski resorts in the world, St Anton am Arlberg offers much more than the mountainside après ski at the Mooserwirt and the Krazy Kanguruh. The area running from the Galzigbahn to the pedestrianised main street is awash with bars and clubs that welcome a truly international audience.

Those making it down from the Mooserwirt are confronted with Das Basecamp - a ski-in and near-inescapable après ski bar.Groups looking for fine dining as well as boots on the table après ski can find some excellent contemporary cuisine.

Once the ski boots are out of their bindings and firmly on the main pedestrianised section of St Anton, it is possible to party till the morning gondola queues are beginning to form! There are local’s bars, dance clubs, sausage stands - very many ways to keep those ski boots on 24/7 - it's been known to happen!
