Lech Zürs ski guide

Lech Zürs is one of the most famous ski destinations in the world. For corporate ski trip planners, the twin resorts offer world-class skiing and luxurious and charming villages. The skiing is extraordinary – the best in Austria and possibly the Alps.

The Lech Zürs ski area is part of the wider Arlberg ski region – the best and biggest ski area in Austria. St Anton is part of the Arlberg, as well as Stuben and Warth-Schröcken. All areas can be reached by ski piste and lifts – the combined area is remarkable.

LECH SKIING

Lech is an intermediate skier’s dream. The area is a sea of blue pistes, all covered in famous Arlberg snow.

There is skiing on both sides of the village, and lift and piste links to the Zürs and Warth-Schröcken ski sectors.

There are ski-in, ski-out hotels and a fully ski-in, ski-out village at Oberlech. Lech mountain huts are places of wonder.

LECH BEGINNER SKIING

The beginner ski area in Lech is just behind the resort centre on the eastern side of the road. Beginner skiers will soon progress into the actual ski area, and the slopes between the Kriegerhorn and the village are dominated by easy, blue slopes.

LECH INTERMEDIATE SKIING

Intermediate skiers can descend to the Zuger Horn area for the best Lech terrain or head into the Zürs ski area via the Rüfikopf cable car. Here, the skiing becomes a little more challenging, with narrower, longer blues pistes, some ski routes (although the gradient isn’t so challenging) and onto the red pistes beneath the Hexeboden.

LECH EXPERT SKIING

Advanced skiers in Lech will probably need to head off-piste or to the ski routes to get their thrills. Heli-ski flights leave the Lech ski area for the ultimate ski experience on peaks west of the Arlberg ski area. For tougher, inbounds skiing, Zürs has the more challenging terrain.

Zürs skiing

Zürs offers some of the best powder snow and ski routes in the Arlberg ski region – the Zürs ski area is rated one of the best in the Alps.

Beginners have a flat section on the edge of the village, whilst the area is great for better intermediates.

There is a clockwise loop between the Lech and Zürs ski areas. The ski route into Zug and Lech can sometimes be tough, but a bus connects the two ski sectors. For better skiers and boarders, this and other Zürs ski routes are incredible.

ZÜRS BEGINNER SKIING

Beginner skiing in Zürs takes place on the Eastern side of the village. There are moving carpet lifts and a short chair that access gentle terrain.

ZÜRS INTERMEDIATE SKIING

The best intermediate terrain is probably found in Lech, although the ski route into the Lech ski area from Madloch can be challenging. Timid intermediates would be advised to take the bus connection to Lech village and access the wonderful skiing there. The route back from Lech into the Zürs ski sector is less tricky, with the runs down from the Rüfikopf into Zürs offering some great intermediate terrain.

ZÜRS EXPERT SKIING

Advanced and expert skiers will get their kicks in the off-piste terrain of Zürs. After new snow, the Zürs area is an absolute off-piste paradise. Black pistes are very limited in Lech Zürs, but the ski routes offer far more of a challenge in any case, and they are plentiful, especially in Zürs. Don’t be deceived by the piste map - tough skiing in the Arlberg isn't limited to St Anton.

THE ARLBERG

Lech Zürs is an integral part of the Arlberg region - the biggest and best ski area in Austria, with over 300km of pistes and 85 ski lifts.

The ski region has diverse terrain from the steeps of St Anton to the cruisers of Lech am Arlberg. The resorts are also different, with different characteristics in each ski village.

One feature that is found across the whole ski region is snow – the Arlberg is reckoned to have the highest snow accumulations in the entire Alps.

ST ANTON SKIING

St Anton welcomes global skiers who come to experience one of the world’s greatest ski areas. Aside from timid beginners, St. Anton is extraordinary with extensive and diverse ski terrain. The Rendl sector of the ski resort is less crowded and offers some fantastic tree skiing. The Valluga area is the gateway to St Anton’s famous steeps. For those wanting to access the off-piste and ski routes, guides are highly recommended – this is rugged, unforgiving terrain. St Christoph offers respite from the tough terrain, and less advanced skiers and snowboarders can download on the Galzig cable car and avoid the traffic on the resort runs.

STUBEN SKIING

Stuben is one of the less-used sectors of the Arlberg ski area. It is a side excursion with few lifts, and until recently, those lifts were the stuff of museums. This kept the masses from discovering the best off-piste in the Arlberg and, many would argue, the finest off-piste ski area in the Alps. After fresh snow, Stuben delivers truly epic routes from the Albona ridge, high above the resort. This is the area of choice for ski guides and locals on powder days.

WARTH-SCHRÖCKEN SKIING

Warth-Schröcken is the northernmost extent of the Arlberg ski resort and is part of the Bregenzerwald valley – a stunning valley in the far northeast of Austria and the snowiest region in the Alps. Snowfall accumulations here can be extraordinary. The Warth-Schröcken ski area is ideal for intermediate skiers or for those seeking big off-piste snow depths.

ARLBERG OFF-PISTE

Arlberg has the best snow record in the Alps, and it is a Mecca for off-piste skiing.

In addition to the superb snow record, the terrain in the Arlberg offers incredible off-piste routes. Stuben am Arlberg could well be the best off-piste area in the Alps.

The best skiers and snowboarders should consider a heli-ski side trip. Lech Zürs is the only location in Austria that permits heli-skiing, the ultimate off-piste experience,

ARLBERG OFF-PISTE SKIING

HELI-SKIING

For the ultimate off-piste experience, the best skiers and boarders on a corporate ski trip should consider a heli-ski excursion. Flights leave from Lech and Zürs and access remote peaks to the west of the marked ski area.

Accommodated by a certified mountain guide, the group are dropped off on one of these remote peaks before descending down some of the most incredible terrain in the Alps.

STUBEN AM ARLBERG

One of the best-kept secrets of the Alps, Stuben am Arlberg offers arguably the best off-piste terrain in the Alps, with the Albona ridge offering huge, steep terrain that is frequently deep in the famous Arlberg snow.

Recent lift upgrades have made the ski area more popular, but the best terrain is reached by lift and then a ski tour or hike. Guides are essential, and days don’t get better than the Albona ridge in fresh snow.

ST ANTON STEEPS

St Anton offers steep, rugged terrain. Combined with its superb snow record, this makes it a standout destination for off-piste skiing. The Rendl sector offers fantastic tree-skiing routes, whilst the Valluga access the steeps and couloirs that St Anton is famous for.

WARTH SNOW

Historic snow records indicate that Warth is the snowiest ski area in the Alps. The winter storm systems roll in from the east and Lake Constance, and the first big peaks they hit are in the Bregenzerwald. Snow levels can be eye-watering.
