YOU CAN PLAY FOOTBALL, EVEN RUGBY, BUT YOU CAN'T PLAY APRÈS SKI

Having endured the torment of watching colleagues charge through knee-deep powder, or throw 360’s, après ski is the great leveller, where daytime show-boating counts for nothing and the last ski boots standing are the real heroes of the day.

Austria is the undisputed king of après ski and there isn’t a tranquil corner of the Austrian Alps at 16:00 during the winter months. This Austrian national pastime has caught the attention of the French and terraces now pump from mid-afternoon there as well.

APRÈS SKI PRACTICALITIES

You can witness après ski evolving through the afternoon, as skiers and snowboarders find a comfortable spot, order a glass of something and have the body language of someone who won't be stepping into bindings any time soon. Planks parked, the music ramps up as time edges toward lift closing and the air space is filled with schnapps-laden trays.

Pre-smart phones, it could be a lonely time trying to light the après blue touch paper, whilst the lifts were still rolling. In the more connected world that we now inhabit, selfies of lovingly caressed beer glasses are successfully shared across the ski area, and like moths to the light, a lone mission soon morphs into a group après ski circus.

APRÈS SKI LOCATIONS

Kitzbühel is known globally for its Kitzbühel Hahnenkamm race weekend, but as well as hosting the sport’s greatest spectacle, Kitzbühel offers world-beating après ski. The Mocking das Wirtshaus (formerly Streifalm) is mighty hard to pass without succumbing, whilst anyone found there will have to be seriously determined to avoid the Londoner later in the evening.

KITZBÜHEL

Forever the poor relative to Austria, France is now a credible force in world après ski. Méribel has the fantastic La Folie Douce on its slopes and most departing there will be caught in the tractor beam of the Rond Point. From there, Méribel is your oyster and you won't be alone if you plan to party until dawn.
